• The improved magic lantern by Willem Jakob ‘sGravesande, from Physices Elementa Mathamatica, Vol. 2, (Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden], 1721), Tab. XIV, Fig. 3.

• The arrangement of lenses and reflector in ‘sGravesande’s magic lantern, clearly showing the stop or aperture introduced between the two projection lenses, at f.

• Five moving slides published by Petrus van Musschenbroek in his Beginselen der Natuurkunde (Leiden, 1739), pl. XXI. Probably made and painted by Petrus himself, the slides date from before 1720.

• Title page of a pamphlet outlining a public lecture course in London “perform’d by Francis Hauksbee” [the Younger], with the “Explanatory Lectures read by William Whiston, M. A.”

• Francis Hauksbee’s magic lantern, c. 1714, from his lecture pamphlet. The lantern is a curious combination of the south German horizontal cylindrical body and a tall corrugated London chimney, clearly a transitional design.

• Abbé Jean-Antoine Nollet giving a demonstration, from the frontispiece of his Leçons de Physique Expermentale (Paris, 1743). Note that his audience is predominantly female.

• The magic lantern in Gilles-Edmé Guyot’s Neuer physikalische und mathematische Belustigungen (Augsburg, 1772). This design of magic lantern was widely copied in books on natural magic and rational recreations in the last quarter of the century.

• By 1800, Gilles-Edmé Guyot’s book Neuer physikalische und mathematische Belustigungen had acquired beautifully hand-coloured illustrations, Vol. II, Pl. 86, Fig. 2.

• The magic lantern in Johann Samuel Halle’s Magie, oder die Zauberkräfte der Natur (Berlin, 1783). Another reproduction of Guyot’s original illustration.

•   The magic lantern from Benjamin Martin’s The Young Gentleman and Lady’s Philosophy (London, 1763), Plate L, Fig. III. Martin was importing many of his instruments from Germany, probably Nürnberg, including this early example of a Bull’s-Eye lantern.

• A mechanical display cabinet for showing engravings, here illustrating a domestic magic lantern show, invented and sold by Johann Conrad Gütle, from Gütle, Zaubermechanik, oder Beschreibung mechanischer Zauberbelustigungen

• The cover flap pasted in to each copy of Zaubermechanik, oder Beschreibung mechanischer Zauberbelustigungen (Nurnberg und Altdorf, 1794), Tab. XVII, which when raised shows the previous image.
